North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College (NWSLC) is celebrating the success of its students as they receive their GCSE results. In total over 1100 students were awarded grades in maths and English based on the higher of their tutor’s predicted grade. This included 389 adult students aged over 19, the oldest of whom was 59.

Achievement of Grades 9-4 in English amongst adults was 63 per cent, rising to 60 per cent for maths. Three-year trend data highlights a significant increase in high grade achievement in maths by students aged 16-18.

Successful students included Zahra Ali who was delighted to have been awarded a Grade 8 for her maths GCSE. Zahra, 24 is about to start her second year at University College Birmingham where she is studying for a degree in education. Zahra said, “I am proud of myself because I worked really hard and it’s a great achievement. I want to be a teacher, so it was important to me to be able to tackle maths. I want my children to be proud of me in the future.”

Hazbije Dema, 25 from Nuneaton, successfully achieved a Grade 8 for maths and Grade 5 for English. Hazbije who is originally from Albania, moved to the UK five years ago. She is planning to study accountancy at the college in September with the aim of moving on to higher education. Hazbije said, “I am a numbers person and there is a background of working in accountancy in my family. Hopefully my success will lead to a career in the sector in the future.”

Young people who received their results today include those who studied as part of a group who elect to be educated at home. Some students have never attended mainstream schools while others have left the school system. This year, the college supported nearly 60 home-educated students and more than 40 were awarded grades for GCSE English language and maths, with 60% achieving high grades. Around 20 students are now progressing into further education programmes with NWSLC.

In addition, students participating in a college programme for young people aged 14-16 have been praised for their success at GCSE. The students are part of the NWSLC Inspire programme, an alternative to traditional mainstream schooling. Ten Year 11 students were awarded GCSE grades in five subjects having overcome multiple barriers to learning. The students, from a variety of backgrounds across Warwickshire and the West Midlands, have been studying for GCSEs and functional skills in a way that supports their individual needs. Subjects studied were English, maths, geography, science, and modern ethics.

Marion Plant, OBE FCGI, Principal and Chief Executive of NWSLC said, “We are delighted with the progress that has been made in GCSE subjects this year which has been hard won by students who have shown considerable tenacity in what has been another difficult year.

“The results have shown that further education can be a life-changing experience for young people and adults alike and provides fantastic opportunities for those that work hard. We congratulate all our students on their results and wish them well for their future success.”
