Foundation Learning/ Lifeworks

RARPA (Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement) allows Foundation Learning programmes to be flexible and based on your starting point and what you want to achieve.

We are all about the Learning Journey of each young person; we are all unique and so is the journey. We will develop your essential skills such as independence, confidence, employability and wellbeing, whilst also adding maths, English and other skills which we will plan together along the journey.

We offer this unique course at our Nuneaton and Wigston Campuses. Find out more below.

Foundation Learning

On each course, we work towards RARPA. Each student works towards 5 targets and we map the year to their individual targets. This could be anything from travel training, independent living or working towards English and maths.

When students attend their interview they will be able to discuss their goals and what they want to achieve. They will then be placed on one of the following routes:

Nuneaton Campus - Foundation Learning Routes

This course offers students a chance to work within a smaller group and learn skills such as how to budget and shop for meals. The group will develop their communication skills and begin the first steps to independence. The course will enable the students to grow in confidence in a safe and secure environment.

This course is all about practical projects and problem-solving. Working to develop vital teamwork skills, communication and becoming a leader. Students will take on a range of projects in the community with organisations including: Attleborough Baptist Church, Hartshill Hays, Bedworth Cricket Club, Exhall Grange School and many more.

In this course students are given increased levels of independence and responsibility over their project. They will research ways to complete different tasks such as:

  • Making benches out of pallet wood
  • Painting and decorating
  • Clearing outdoor areas

This course will take you on the first steps towards working in Hairdressing or Childcare with lots of tasters in both areas, You will develop your communication and teamwork skills while taking on lots of creative craft projects to raise money for charity.

Students will work towards independent living and build vital skills for employment. There will be opportunities to explore lots of different areas at the college and work experience opportunities.

Wigston Campus - Foundation Learning Routes

This course is designed to develop employability skills. This ranges from confidence and ability in interviews through to technical skills in hospitality, catering, administration, and retail. Throughout the year, there will be opportunities to develop essential leadership skills, confidence and perseverance while completing in-house projects or work placements.

A tailored course to support progression into a specific vocational education pathway. A year of projects and opportunities, designed to nurture confidence, self-awareness and direction in a young person’s life. As well as this, a big emphasis on independence will have the learners cooking, shopping, working, and travelling with decreasing support where appropriate throughout the year.

The course is designed specifically to develop young people’s independence within the home and community. This will be facilitated through improving self-confidence, teamwork, and developing maturity. The course will include a wide range of functional skills that are transferable into everyday life. For example, bus travel, time management, and money skills.

This course is designed to encourage creativity through exposure to the world of art, design, media, and to develop communication skills, both written and verbal. In addition to this, learning how to cook a wide variety of healthy meals, is just one of the valuable life skills within which students on this course will be immersed.

This course allows students to use creativity to develop essential communication skills.

Students on this course will have the opportunity to participate in several work placement schemes, which will see them out of the classroom and into the community, working as part of a team, and learning practical skills such as horticulture. Some of the food harvested is also used in the college training kitchen, where the learners can practice their cooking skills to create healthy meals.

Supported internships are a great way to break down the barriers to accessing work. Throughout our programme you will fulfil a role at a business full time, develop vital job skills, travel independently and build a network thinking about your next steps into employment.

Lifeworks

LifeWorks courses have been designed to bridge the gap between leaving college or school courses and entering the workplace, and is exclusively for learners with special educational needs over the age of 18.

Nuneaton Campus - Lifeworks Routes

Lifeworks empowers students to gain skills and experience in preparing for work and moving towards supported or independent living. We have sessions in employability, creative enterprise projects and photography. We run and manage the student tuckshop and complete travel training. Every student also completes a work experience placement to help develop their job skills.

Entry requirements: None, Students only require an EHCP to access this course.

Additional Learning Support (SEND, EHCP and Foundation Learning)

Additional Learning Support (ALS) is available across all NWSLC campuses. We are committed to providing the highest standards of support to our learners, tailoring our provision according to the nature of individuals’ Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND).
