Also known as Functional skills, this is often the first step back into education for most adults. So the groups are small and everyone is friendly – with a relaxed atmosphere.

This is a course that helps to support you with refreshing your skills in spelling, punctuation, grammar, reading accuracy and writing. It also includes communication skills. You are fully supported in all the work that you do and well prepared so that you are able to sit the Functional Skills exams with confidence.

The Functional Skills exams have been developed with practical everyday work skills in mind and cover 5 levels recognised in the workplace. You will be assessed prior to joining.

This is a great way to start building up your skills and confidence, and learners often move onto GCSE English for adults.

Also known as Functional skills, this is an easy to access course that develops maths skills using five levels of maths study. The course is in a relaxed and supportive environment to help you achieve your goals. The course will cover the three main topics in Functional Skills Maths, which are number, measure, shape and space and handling data.

The maths will look at ‘real life’ maths and focus on where they occur in the workplace and in everyday living, this will also be reflected in the assessment, which will be flexible and available when you are confident in successfully completing it.

All levels are recognised in the workplace and education and it is a great way to improve your skills and confidence in maths and could prepare you towards studying GCSE Maths in the future.

This is typically a year-long programme which will prepare you to pass your exam and develop your skills and confidence in the subject. This qualification is an essential requirement for many careers and for further study. Many adults join us with very little confidence but leave us feeling that they have made considerable progress throughout the year and have enjoyed their experience of learning.

During the year, we will cover both fiction & non-fiction texts, and you will learn how to understand and analyse them. You will be supported in developing your written work by learning about narratives, descriptions and writing to express an opinion. One of the key aspects covered is development of punctuation, spelling and grammar, so if this is an area you struggle with, you will have the opportunity to build these skills as well.

The course includes extensive exam preparation, enabling you to feel ready and able to take the external exam.

This course starts in September and lasts until exams in the summer term.

Achieving a level 4 (grade C) or higher will increase your opportunities to apply for a variety of jobs and further courses. GCSE maths is increasingly becoming a condition for many higher level courses. If you left school some time ago, it’s not too late to study a GCSE maths qualification.

Many adults lack confidence at the beginning of the course, but then go on to make considerable improvements whilst enjoying their learning experience.

This course typically lasts a year and includes developing your basic skills, with multiplication and division, addition and subtraction, fractions, percentages and basic algebra.  After developing a strong base in these topics, the course will then progress slowly, towards more advanced concepts and topics. You will be fully supported throughout the course and in your preparation for the summer exams.
