The British Values

The government set out their definition of British Values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy. In 2014, the Department of Education published guidance on promoting British Values in schools to ensure young people leave school and college prepared for life in Modern Britain.

At North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College, we are dedicated to promoting values which ensure that our students develop a strong sense of social and moral responsibility. We prepare our students for life in Modern Britain by developing an understanding of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

The five definitions of British values are as follows:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect
  • Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs

It is our aim that all North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College students are able to contribute effectively to the wider community, using the skills and knowledge they have acquired during their time here. As well as being fully engaged in their learning experience, we want our students to become responsible and well-rounded individuals.

Our College Strategic Plan confirms a mission to achieve success through learning, through the following values:

  • Respect and nurture
  • Inspire and aspire
  • Be agile and responsive
  • Be honest and accountable

A North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College student will always be Ready, Responsible and Respectful.

To ensure that our students develop the skills, knowledge and behaviour required, as School Leaders and Governors, we are responsible for providing a curriculum which:

  • Is broad and balanced, complies with statutory requirements and provides a wide range of subjects which prepare students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life in Modern Britain.
  • Actively promotes the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of lawindividual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance.
  • Promotes tolerance of and respect for people of all faiths, no faith and of different cultures through the effective spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils.

Democracy

The principle of democracy is consistently being reinforced at North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College, as all students are encouraged to debate topics of interest, express their views and make a meaningful contribution to the running of the College on matters that directly involve students.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the College or the country, are consistently reinforced at North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College.

Individual Liberty

At North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College, students are actively encouraged to make independent choices with the knowledge that they are in a safe, secure and supportive environment. Staff at North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College educate and provide boundaries for students to make informed choices, through a safe environment and an empowering education.

North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College has a robust anti-bullying culture and has in place a comprehensive Behaviour Policy that promotes achievement for all students.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

Respect is a strong part of North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College and is part of our College Shared Values. Students learn that their behaviour has an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the College community treat each other with respect and this is reiterated through our teaching and learning environments.

Students are helped to acquire an understanding of, and respect for, their own and other cultures and ways of life. Our College welcomes those with varying backgrounds and we teach our students to understand their place in a culturally diverse society. Staff and pupils are encouraged to challenge prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour wherever it occurs.

North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College strive endlessly to ensure that its students leave with the strongest foundation of values upon which to build a successful life and a successful contribution to our society.
