This qualification covers the technical needs for basic repair and preparation procedures. It provides essential knowledge and skills for vehicle body paint operators, working on a wide range of vehicles, in all types of garages, dealerships and specialist body paint businesses.


  • The study programme involves learners studying both the theory and practical aspects, including preparing metal and pre-painted surfaces, preparing and applying fillers and foundation materials to vehicles, repairing minor paint defects and working with plastic components.

    Learners will also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements are 4 GCSE’s at Grade 3(D) or above including English and Maths, or progression from Level 1 or a relevant Level 1 qualification.


You will require steel toe cap boots, overalls, pen/pencil, notepad/folder and a memory stick. In addition, you will require an industry standard cartridge face mask, for application of certain materials. Air fed masks will be provided for use in the booth.

Next Steps

On successful completion of your study programme, including English and Maths, your next step will be to progress onto one of our Level 3 study programmes. To progress, attendance must remain above 85%.
