Career background:
“I was a cabin crew manager and trainer, based at Birmingham airport. I worked for six airlines over 27 years, including Tui, British Airways and, most recently, Flybe. I was a trainer within the industry and taught cabin crew evacuation and emergency procedures as well as first aid, firefighting, cabin service and more. This gave me the qualification and skills to transfer to teach in a college.

“What I love most about this industry is the people, they are amazing. Hard working, diverse and interesting. Key benefits of working in the industry included being able to travel as part of our day-to-day role, and meeting people from all over the world. Night stops in 4 and 5 star hotels. The concessions you get within the industry are fantastic; 90% discount on flights and often up to 50% off hotels.”

What do you love most about teaching at the college?
“Sharing experiences and watching students develop and learn throughout their time in the classroom.”

Top tips
“If you like working with people, have good communication skills, and a desire to travel, this is the course for you. There are many life skills we study during the course and a huge part of it includes role plays and practical lessons. You can’t be shy!
You must be able to swim 25m, as it is a requirement of the course and be prepared to wear and follow industry uniform standards, this includes restrictions on jewellery.

Aviation has been hit hard and many, including myself, lost jobs due to the pandemic. However, there has been a huge increase in demand for travel and the industry is desperate for staff. Our courses are a great opportunity for those wishing to join. Having the knowledge and skills you will learn during this course will give you the confidence to gain a position in the industry.
