Prospective apprenticeships have been in the spotlight thanks to a wholesale takeover of a college website this month. North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College (NWSLC) dedicated its entire online presence to apprenticeships attracting 300 individuals to join the event online generating 50 new website applications.

Visitors to the NWSLC website on 19 August 2021 were able to go directly to information that enabled them to find out all they need to know about apprenticeships, the benefits of training while they work, how to apply and all about the current vacancies available through the college.

Katy Urwin, Director for Apprenticeships at NWSLC said, “We were delighted with the response to our website takeover event and pleased that there are so many people interested in finding out about apprenticeships.

“It was a great opportunity for anyone who has been thinking about an apprenticeship or is unsure of their next steps after receiving their results this year, to have a good look at what’s involved and explore the types of industries that are currently recruiting apprentices. Some of the exciting positions currently on offer include:

  • Powered access technicians
  • Forklift truck service engineers
  • Legal and administration positions
  • Chefs and front of house roles
  • Doctor’s surgery receptionist.

Businesses across Warwickshire and Leicestershire are working with NWSLC to find talented individuals to join their teams as the economy continues to recover in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Katy Urwin added, “We know that the impact of the pandemic has been felt more strongly by younger workers and that is why we are pleased to be working with organisations across the region who are looking for fresh, new talent to support their recovery and growth.

“Colleges are leading the way to help reenergise the UK economy and NWSLC is in a great position to make links between organisations that need skills and individuals looking for work, whether they are starting out for the first time, retraining to follow a new direction, or seeking support following redundancy. It is our mission to introduce skilled and work-ready individuals to employers across the region.

“We want people to know that they can be eligible for an apprenticeship no matter what their starting point might be. If they don’t have GCSEs in maths or English at grade 4 or above, they can study and get qualified while they work. Our student engagement team is on hand to help with applications, job search and advice. The vital first step is simply to contact the college and our team will provide guidance on the process.”

NWSLC responded to the Government’s ‘Plan for Jobs’ by launching its Community Skills Hub last year to provide access to all the information, advice and guidance that is available to support economic recovery following the coronavirus pandemic. The NWSLC Community Skills Hub offer includes:

  • Bootcamps in software development and coding that will open the doors to vacancies through our dedicated Digital Skills Academy
  • A wide range of apprenticeship opportunities with support to find vacancies and succeed in interviews
  • Pathways to the Kickstart job scheme for those at risk of long-term unemployment
  • Free Level 3 courses for adults in priority sectors through the Lifetime Skills Guarantee
  • Free online short courses leading to Level 2 and 3 qualifications that help individuals to improve their skills or retrain
  • Help with English and maths qualifications
  • Ways to prepare for university and routes into higher-level study.
