Students at North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College’s ‘mini school’ for keyworkers have created a giant rainbow in the window of their classroom at the college’s Nuneaton Campus.

In recent weeks, the rainbow symbol has been adopted by people wanting to show solidarity with NHS workers fighting against Covid-19. Thousands of rainbow images can be seen across the country, created by children and young people as a sign of hope and gratitude in a time of uncertainty.

The college is supporting its local communities to help keep the UK moving during the coronavirus crisis and its Nuneaton Campus is open to the children of keyworkers and to vulnerable students including those with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP). This provision extends to pupils who normally attend the Midland Academies Trust (MAT) schools which are sponsored by NWSLC. Staff from the individual schools have joined college staff to provide ongoing study and support in a safe and well-managed environment.

Students who continue to attend college have become part of the NWSLC engagement project where they are being enabled to progress with their studies. Additional activities including sport and exercise are being organised for these students, as well as opportunities to get creative.

Every effort will be made to help students who are not attending college to complete their courses and achieve their qualifications by the end of the summer term. All prospective students who have applied to start a college course in September 2020 have been assured that they will be offered a place.

Marion Plant, OBE FCGI, Principal and Chief Executive of NWSLC said, “It is lovely to see that such a positive symbol of hope has been created by the young people whom we are looking after as part of the ‘mini school’ provision at our Nuneaton Campus. College staff and colleagues from the MAT are working so hard to keep them on track and provide them with interesting and stimulating activities while also taking account of social distancing measures. I am proud that they are rising to the challenge at this difficult time.”
