Tonight we will rightly applaud our amazing NHS and social care staff. My pan lids are ready for some more action.

I shall also be applauding all those teachers and education support staff – right across the country – who have stepped forward to support the children and young adults of key workers and for those who are most vulnerable in our society.

Many schools and colleges will remain open over Easter (including the bank holidays) and willing staff will come in to schools and colleges to provide this vital support as part of the national effort.

Mostly all of those involved in education – not just the lecturers, teachers and teaching assistants but also the caterers, cleaners, estates personnel and others – appreciate their role and how they too are making a difference at this challenging time. Their contribution is quite literally a ‘life-line’ to youngsters many of whom find themselves in desperate situations.

This provision is well illustrated by the Midland Academies Trust and North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College who are working closely together to maintain provision for up to 40 young people.

On a daily basis, we are having to turn away staff members willing to volunteer to come in. Many are relentlessly working from home to deliver remote learning. Others are preparing to manufacture PPE equipment using 3D printers, sharing food with local food banks, sewing scrubs using our textiles store and distributing existing stocks of PPE to local hospices and hospitals.

Please join me in giving all these people a richly-deserved, big, shout-out tonight!
