Local students attended a construction careers event at North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College last week.

Young people from five schools across the region visited the college’s specialist construction campus in Harrowbrook on Tuesday 8 October. The schools included Hartshill School, the George Eliot School, The Nuneaton Academy and Heath Lane Academy who are all part of the Midland Academies Trust, sponsored by the college. They were also joined by students from Higham Lane School.

Representatives from IM Properties and Winvic Construction kicked off the event with a presentation about their careers in the industry and information about the new Hinckley Park development, which will be home to DPDs largest parcel hub in Europe and Hinckley 532, a speculatively built 532,500 sq ft industrial/logistics facility..

Students then took part in a number of taster activities including bricklaying, painting and decorating, carpentry and joinery.

Katy Urwin, Director for Apprenticeships at the college said: “Thank you to Richard Lawrence from IM Properties and Darren from Winvic for attending the event and inspiring these young people to really consider a career in construction. Students left with a better understanding of large-scale construction projects and the types of careers available to them in this exciting sector.”

Richard Lawrence development director at IM Properties said: “There is a very real skill shortage in the construction sector and so it’s important to encourage young people to consider the varied roles available in an industry which contributes significantly to the UK’s economy.

“We are committed as a company and at Hinckley Park to working with local communities to stimulate employment and training opportunities and value the opportunity to work in partnership with the college.”
