Engineering students and apprentices will take their place as part of an online showcase to highlight opportunities for young people at the virtual WorldSkills UK LIVE event this month. They include Antoine Akouete-Kuevy who is studying engineering at the Nuneaton Campus of North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College (NWSLC) and Suzanne Greatwood, an engineering apprentice who is working for JBMPS Ltd in Coventry.

The students were interviewed in college and at work for one of the WorldSkills UK LIVE online spotlight talks on careers and apprenticeships developed in partnership with BAE Systems and designed to bring together the UK’s leading employers to inspire even more young people, from all walks of life, to take up technical career routes and apprenticeships.

The college’s spotlight talk will take place at 1.30 pm on Thursday 26 November. Aimed at young people aged 12-18, the video includes tours of the college’s campuses and facilities as well as a chance to hear about engineering careers from college tutors.

Marion Plant, OBE FCGI, Principal and Chief Executive of North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College, who is also deputy chair and trustee of WorldSkills, said, “Enabling young people to access the skills they need to succeed in work and life has never been more important.

“The WorldSkills UK LIVE experience has been recreated online this year and we’re sure that young people who take part will have their eyes opened to the exciting career opportunities available to them. The engineering sector is one of the fastest-growing and most dynamic in the UK, and it needs to attract recruits as early as possible to address emerging skills gaps.

“We hope that hearing stories like those of Antoine and Suzanne will inspire the young people who attend our spotlight talk and encourage them to think about taking up technical education in the future.”

To find out more about the skills on offer, the college is hosting its latest virtual open event online on Wednesday, 25 November from 6 pm – 8 pm. To register go to www.nwslc.ac.uk.

WorldSkills UK LIVE will return to the NEC in 2021.
