Creative college tutors have designed and made protective headbands for NHS staff to help make their face masks more comfortable as they treat hospital patients with coronavirus. Caitlin McReynolds, who teaches business management at the college’s Wigston Campus was inspired to start crafting by her sister who is a nurse at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Caitlin approached Ash Fabrics at Leicester Market who donated 50 metres of a soft jersey fabric. Staff volunteers from the college plan to make 150 headbands and donate them to the hospital.

Along with the new equipment, 18 cases of Britvic soft drinks, supplied by its logistics partner, Wincanton, will provide refreshments free of charge for nursing staff at the hospital. The college approached Wincanton for the donation after recently delivering health and safety training to its staff. Wincanton has also helped Britvic to support staff at the newly formed NHS Nightingale Hospital at London’s ExCeL centre by despatching soft drinks and storage fridges for use by staff.

NWSLC’s Wigston Campus is currently closed but is providing a welfare drop-in session between 11am and 1pm on weekdays for students in need of support. Students are being supported to continue their learning online, and the college continues to take applications for courses starting in September 2020.

Marion Plant, OBE FCGI, Principal and Chief Executive of NWSLC said, “This is a great initiative on the part of tutors at our Wigston Campus and the kind donations from the wider community and local businesses illustrate how well everyone is working together during this challenging time. We are delighted to have been able to make a contribution to the wellbeing of our dedicated NHS staff in Leicester who are working tirelessly to look after us at this time of national crisis.”
