Apprenticeships

Hairdressing

More than 43,000 hairdressing and beauty businesses generate more than £7.5bn for the UK economy. A career in hairdressing is about more than cutting and colouring hair. It requires a complete skillset that includes:

  • Active listening skills
  • Patience
  • the ability to work well as part of a team
  • Great customer service
  • Excellent communication skills both in-person and on the telephone.

With the relevant experience and qualifications, someone who started off working in a salon on a Saturday could find themselves progressing to a junior stylist then, eventually taking charge of their own salon. As you work your way up in a salon, you will learn how to:

  • Advise clients on cut and style
  • Keep up to date with trends and news in the hairdressing world
  • Order stock
  • Take bookings and organise the diary.

Many salons today have diversified space to other specialists, such as nail technicians, make-up artists and tanning experts. You can find out more about careers in hairdressing from the Hair and Beauty Industry Authority and National Hairdressers’ Federation.
