Parents and Carers

Thank you for considering North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College as the next step for your son or daughter! We understand that parents and carers play a huge part in helping young people make decisions about their future, so we aim to provide you with all the information you need so you can help them make the right choice for their next step.

North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College offers two main pathways for your school-leaving child: full-time study programmes, which are mainly classroom-based, and Apprenticeship programmes which allow students to earn as they learn. Both routes provide students with a complete learning package designed to maximise their career prospects and widen their opportunities for further study at college or university.

Furthermore, both options offer valuable work experience, putting students in a strong position for securing permanent employment in a competitive job market. In addition, every student studies English and Maths at the relevant levels alongside their qualification.

The College also offers lots of extra-curricular opportunities including skills competitions, visits, trips and sports.

Study Programmes

We offer a wide range of full-time Study Programme options for school leavers – each course has a valid progression pathway to further study, university study and sustainable employment.

Classroom-based: Learning may take place in a traditional classroom environment, or within our many real-life working environments, such as our engineering workshops, our salons or in our recording studios.

Vocational: Our qualifications relate directly to local and regional jobs.

English & Maths: Employers value English and Maths skills highly and every student will benefit from literacy and numeracy being embedded in the classroom/ vocational environments. Depending on your son or daughter’s grades, they may either study a GCSE in English and/or Maths or a functional skill in either subject.

Work experience: Every student will have the opportunity to experience working in their chosen sector or job area through work experience and work-related projects.

Added-value: We will also support your son or daughter to develop their communication and teamwork skills, get involved in sport and enrichment activities, stretch and challenge themselves through competition and by taking part in trips and visits.

Available at all levels: Study programmes are available from entry-level right up to degree level. Where your son or daughter starts will depend on their prior skills and qualifications.

Apprenticeships

We offer a wide range of Apprenticeship options for school leavers – each programme has a valid progression pathway to further study, university study and sustainable employment.

Industry-based: All Apprenticeships are real jobs so all Apprentices earn a salary. Apprentices should work for at least 30 hours per week and an Apprenticeship takes between one and five years to complete, depending upon the level of Apprenticeship and the industry sector.

Earn a wage: Apprentices earn at least the national minimum Apprenticeship wage (£3.70 per hour from April 2018), with many employers paying more.

Work-related study: Apprenticeships are tailored to meet the needs of employers and most of the training is delivered in the workplace. They include vocational qualifications (such as NVQs) and technical certificates.

English & Maths: Employers value English and Maths skills highly, and every apprentice will benefit from literacy and numeracy being embedded throughout the Apprenticeship. Depending on your son or daughter’s grades, they may need to complete a formal qualification in English and/or maths.

Added-value: We will also support your son or daughter to develop their communication and teamwork skills, get involved in sport and enrichment activities, stretch and challenge themselves through competition and by taking part in trips and visits.

Available at all levels: Apprenticeships are available from GCSE equivalent, up to degree level. Where your son/daughter starts will depend on prior skills and qualifications.
