This qualification is designed for individuals who are interested in the classic vehicle restoration industry. On completion, technicians will be able to practically demonstrate that they have the skills required to access work in the classic vehicle restoration industry and the knowledge required to support these skills.


  • This qualification contains a broad spectrum of units to allow learners the flexibility to develop their knowledge and skills across a range of different disciplines or focus on one specific discipline. It also develops the learners understanding of the history and heritage of classic vehicles.This qualification has been developed by The IMI in conjunction with the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs, employers, training providers and the IMI Sector Skills Council. It is the first qualification to be included in the new vehicle restoration apprenticeship framework.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements are 4 GCSE at Grade 3(D) or above, including English and Maths or progression from Level 1 or a relevant Level 1 qualification.


You will require steel toe cap boots, overalls, pen/pencil, notepad/folder and a memory stick. In addition, you will require an industry standard cartridge face mask, for application of certain materials. Air fed masks will be provided for use in the booth.

Courses are free for 16-18 who have not studied higher than GCSEs. Even if you have studied a different course at college or sixth form, we may still be able to help. Speak to the admissions team for more information. There may be free or reduced costs for adults, contact the admissions team to see if you are eligible.

Share Course

On successful completion of your study programme, including English and Maths, your next step will be to progress onto one of our Level 3 study programmes. To progress, attendance must remain above 85%.
