Catering and Hospitality

The hospitality industry is the fourth biggest employer in the UK, accounting for just over three million. Many of those who work in food service and hospitality started off working part-time in a pub, restaurant, or hotel. This gives you valuable experience of a wide range of roles and can help to lay the foundations for a full-time career in the sector.

TV chefs like Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson might inspire you to work in the kitchen, maybe starting as a kitchen assistant or trainee ‘commis’ chef and working your way up to head chef while learning on the job. You might work in a hotel, restaurant or for a catering company.

Front of house and food service jobs can lead to maître d’ roles, like Fred Sirieix, or jobs as a general manager, hotel services manager, food and beverage or service manager.

Wherever you want to specialize, these are just some of the skills you will need:

  • Resilience – the hours can be long and challenging
  • Flexibility – especially if you’re staging an important event or celebration
  • Determination – to achieve the targets you have been set
  • Time management – crucial when managing a busy restaurant
