Football mad Hayden and Oadby Owls under 17 player studied sport at the college’s Wigston Campus and now looks set for a career in sports coaching and teaching. Hayden joined a Level 3 sports course at the college four years ago and is now a full-time sports coordinator at Evington Valley Primary School in Leicester.

Hayden, from Wigston, was delighted to achieve his FA Level 1 qualification at college which provides an introduction to football coaching and enabled him to help out at the Oadby Owls Saturday Academy teaching the basics to young entrants aged under 10. Always keen on coaching others, Hayden was a Year 9 sports leader at school and the academy continues to keep Hayden busy at weekend and on Thursday evenings.

His first year in college was highly practical which kept him on the pitch, and he enjoyed learning the theory behind the art of coaching in Year 2. After successfully completing his qualifications, Hayden approached lots of schools in the local area and was accepted at Parklands Primary School to carry out some coaching. After gaining some valuable experience, Hayden was successful in applying for an apprentice role at Evington Valley and he combines his coaching in school with sessions in college every Monday. In his role as sports coordinator, Hayden coaches every year group in the school in a range of sporting activities including football, hockey and basketball.

Hayden said, “I never wanted to go to university, but my experience has made me think about training to become a PE teacher. I love my job and I find it so rewarding, especially the challenge of working with pupils in Year 6 who are harder to engage.”
