Law student Connall’s college career helped him to start afresh after an injury from playing rugby caused him to miss several months of his A-Level studies. Oadby Wyggestonian player, Connall changed direction after his recovery and signed up for a Level 3 Diploma in Business at North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire’s Wigston campus.

Connall said, “The business course was really broad and included modules on marketing, law and accounting so I was able to develop a good understanding of possible future employment routes. I knew I wanted to go to university, and this seemed to be the best way of securing a place.

“I would absolutely recommend a further education route to anyone. I developed a strong rapport with the teaching staff at the College and found their supportive guidance very helpful in getting me back on track after I had missed some time. I wondered whether universities would prefer A Levels, but I received unconditional offers from five higher education institutions including a travelling scholarship from De Montford University where I chose to study law.”

During his first year at DMU, Connall visited Berlin to learn about the European refugee situation and how students could help. He took part in a debate whilst in Germany involving politicians and the director of a local refugee hostel. Back home, Connall was invited to speak at a university conference during Refugee Week.

Connall became student treasurer of the DMU debating society and co-founded a Model United Nations Society based on DMU’s membership of the UN Join Together Network. Connall was invited to visit the UN’s headquarters in New York to speak on behalf of the university about sustainable development. He later went on to work within the university’s strategic and international partnerships department on sustainable development goals in a role which fitted around his studies.

Through the Join Together network, Connall visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Cyprus, meeting with the foreign minister, the minister for internal affairs and the head of the asylum service. He took a seat at the security council of the Model UN to discuss territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

Connall said, “I have just completed the second year of my degree and look forward to graduating next year. I would love a career in business consultancy which offers a range of different routes including contract and employment law.”
