A student of computer maintenance, Nathan, has not allowed his visual impairment to spoil his dream of working with technology. Joining college from a small special school, Nathan found the college’s busy Nuneaton Campus slightly daunting at first. But he quickly settled in thanks to the support of his tutors, teaching assistant and friendly fellow students.

Nathan, 18, from Bedworth, said, “I have always liked knowing how things work, taking them apart and putting them back together so I was drawn to computer maintenance when I explored the courses available at a college open event.”

Nathan started his studies at Level 1 and has progressed successfully through Level 2, achieving consistently high grades, and is now on the Level 3 programme.

He said, “My teaching assistant is brilliant, and I have access to visual aids including a magnifier to help me read. The Level 3 programme is quite challenging, but I am really enjoying it. I am finishing off my assignments just now but hope to return to college again when it reopens to study business and achieve my maths qualification. I would definitely recommend the college to anyone in my circumstances. Being partially-sighted has been no barrier to me achieving my qualifications and the college is a safe place to come and study.”

Nathan prefers the practical aspects of this course and gets plenty of opportunities to take apart PCs, laptops and printers, troubleshooting any hardware issues. Nathan’s work experience in retail was highly rated for good customer service by the owner of Nuneaton Repair Centre and he has been offered the option of a permanent job there after he has completed his qualifications.

His tutors say that has worked consistently and with determination to navigate issues while always maintaining his good humour.  His enthusiasm and commitment make him a role model within his class – not only because of his determination, but because of his eagerness to help his fellow students and staff.

Nathan isn’t yet sure of his future career path but definitely sees himself working in the IT sector, possibly even running his own business one day.
