Floristry tutor Megan Lomas is a former student of North Warwickshire and Hinckley College. Megan always helped her grandparents in their garden as a child and was inspired with an interest in floristry when she discovered that her great-grandmother worked as a florist in Coventry during the 1950s.

At the age of seven, Megan told her grandfather, while watching the Chelsea Flower Show on TV, that she intended to make an appearance at the show when she grew up. She fulfilled her promise in 2016, and again this year, by competing in the finals of the British Florist Association ‘Young Florist of the Year’ competition.

Having left school at 16 with just three GCSEs, Megan worked her way up from Level 1 to Level 5, firstly at North Warwickshire and Hinckley College in Nuneaton and then at Bishop Burton College, successfully completing a Foundation Degree in Floristry. She has worked in many flower shops over the years in Coventry, Hinckley, Nuneaton and Stratford-on-Avon. Megan has now returned to the College where she started, teaching more than 40 budding florists what she has learned.

In 2018, Megan reached the national final of the RHS Chelsea Young Florist of the Year for the second time after securing a place in the UK top fourteen. To secure her place, she first competed successfully in Scotland, winning the prize for the best bridal shawl for a Scottish wedding.

Megan went to on to compete in Chelsea in the final of the British Florist Association competition, creating a spectacular floral wedding throne in an oval-shaped design for which she selected spring flowers and foliage in yellow, orange and green, including orchids and lily grass. She worked with her Foundation Learning students on the best colours to choose for her elaborate throne creation.

Megan said, “I was delighted to reach the final again and really enjoyed the experience of taking part. I hope that my success will inspire my students to realise that they can do whatever they want if they work hard and focus on their goals. I am also keen to help students understand that dyslexia need not be a barrier to success as I have overcome it myself.

“Because I am not very good with paperwork and words, I find I can really express myself through floral design. Everybody loves flowers and it is fantastic to be able to work in an industry that brings a smile to everyone’s face.”

Following her experience at Chelsea, Megan has been bitten by the competition bug. She said, “I am going to keep trying and now hope to enter the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show.

Marion Plant OBE FCGI said, “We are really proud of Megan. She is a fantastic role model for her students. We place a great deal of emphasis on entering competitions which helps boost students’ confidence and self-esteem.”

Megan is also training with the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies to become a demonstrator.
