Owen Naylor Hall, 16, who studies Level 3 Photography at our Hinckley Campus, was awarded a runner-up prize in the annual competition Better Lives, organised by the Economic and Social Research Council. The competition aims to get 14 to 18-year-olds to explore creatively the relevance of social science to society.

Independence by Owen was awarded £50 in vouchers, at a special ceremony at the Espacio Gallery in London. His photo was entered in the Better Economy category and is a black-and-white image of a young artist trying to start up his business with a small market stall.

Owen explains: “The image shows him standing over his creations, still smiling despite an uncertain financial future. In a time where small local businesses are struggling against massive companies, it is almost comforting to still see local entrepreneurs trying to make a name for themselves.”

James Cunliffe, Photography Course Leader said: “We’re extremely proud of Owen. As a college, we always encourage our students to use their camera to explore the world and use this to develop their own individual understanding of the social and cultural issues around them. Even though Owen is at the start of his photographic education, he is beginning to use photography effectively to both communicate and educate, as his image proves.”
