Maddy has worked at the College for over seven years starting out as a technician within the floristry team and eventually becoming a lecturer. Maddy admits that she did not enjoy school, preferring to work than to follow an academic route. She started to work part-time in her aunt’s florist shop near Ashby de la Zouch when she was 14 and eventually became full-time, gradually learning this creative trade through experience.

Maddy took time out to travel covering south east Asia, Europe and Cuba before settling in to her part time lecturing career at college. She also works on a freelance basis taking commissions to produce floral decorations for house parties on behalf of high-profile celebrity clients including film stars. Maddy has now added events management and wedding planning to her CV and has worked on projects at impressive venues such as Belvoir Castle, Elvaston Castle and Newstead Abbey. During her time at the College, Maddy has gained qualifications in maths and English as well as in teaching.

Maddy said, “I always remind my students that there is more to floristry than retail. Flowers play an important role in almost all formal and celebratory occasions and there is plenty of freelance work available for those with skills and a strong work ethic. When I was working in my aunt’s shop, I never thought that one day I would be helping A list celebrities to get ready for parties. It is rewarding and creative work and there are so many opportunities to develop and specialise. All you have to do is start the ball rolling with a college course and the sky is the limit.”
