It was while she was studying tourism and making uniforms for her peers that Meryeme, 32, from Nuneaton, was inspired to change direction and choose a different path that led her into fashion design. She had always loved fashion, so she decided to make a commitment to a career in the industry. Starting with the Level 3 diploma, Meryeme went on to complete an HND in Fashion and Textiles and is now at Walsall College where she will complete the final year of a BA.

Meryeme had no problem designing clothes but her course helped her to overcome the challenges of making the items and bringing her designs to life. During the HND, she worked on a final major project each year, developing her themes based on classic, chic and glamorous designs, inspired by Lebanese designer, Elie Saab.

Meryeme combined her studies with looking after her growing family. Originally from Morocco, she enjoyed the fact that her fellow students were from different backgrounds, and that the age profile was mixed. Meryeme was full of praise for the College and would have no hesitation in recommending it to others. She found the teaching to be supportive and helpful, and she always had access to great facilities including sewing machines to make her clothes.

Now acquiring new skills including in print-making at Walsall College, Meryeme is expecting an addition to her family and plans to set up her own business once she has graduated, designing and making clothes in her own style.
