Hannah works as a trim development apprentice for Adient, which supplies seats for one third of the world’s vehicles, designing seating for Land Rover models. She attended college two days a week to study for her HND and was able to apply her knowledge of visual communications, print work, digital design, embroidery, pattern cutting and production to the design process.

Hannah helps to design vehicle seating from prototype to the build stage, firefighting production problems. Mark Morrison, chief engineer at Adient said, “Hannah applies her college learning really well in live work situations. She successfully tackled an issue with seating assembly for Jaguar Land Rover by developing a technical engineering solution that was successfully implemented. We have been so impressed with Hannah that we are happy to invest in her studies, supporting her with time away from the workplace to attend college.”

Hannah said, “My enthusiasm for both cars and fashion led me straight from school with an A* in textiles into a job designing seating for the Land Rover Discovery and Evoque. My HND was part of a four-year engineering technical support apprenticeship and, having completed both, I will be going to Coventry University to secure a complete Fashion degree.

“The HND was very flexible and enabled me to focus on textiles for upholstery as well as fashion design. The modules are highly relevant to my industry and specific job role. Following an HND as part of my advanced apprenticeship means that I have progressed from a Level 3 apprenticeship to a degree within five years as well as gaining valuable industry experience along the way without incurring the costs of a three-year undergraduate degree.

“Automotive manufacturers plan production at least five years ahead and I want to stay ahead of trends. Inspired by the Alexander McQueen collection at the V&A, I am focused on innovation and futuristic design styles. I am interested in developing new ideas for interiors based on eco-friendly materials and vegan fabrics. At college, I have access to industry standard equipment including over-lockers, lockstitch, buttonhole and zip machines used in the manufacturing of vehicle seating.”
