Business student Amy Baynes is currently sporting a new look since bravely having her head-shaved to raise money to support the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic. Currently studying at home during lockdown, Amy’s hairdresser sister Charlotte, who qualified at the college’s Nuneaton Campus, carried out the transformation to help Amy reach her goal of raising £170.

Currently in year one of her two-year Level 3 Business programme, Amy has an ambition to work as an accountant and is hoping to secure an apprenticeship when she completes her qualification. Amy, 17, from Bedworth, is used to a busy life. She takes part in many sporting activities at college including badminton, dodge ball, boxing and rugby, and is also a member of Coventry Cycle Speedway, racing single-speed bikes with no brakes around an oval dirt track.

Amy is also active within the college community acting as course representative for around 40 fellow students on two Business programmes. She has enjoyed many opportunities to get involved and plans to join the Students’ Union next year. Outside college, Amy volunteers to help young girls as part of the local Rainbows group and also balances a part-time job at Nuneaton Bowling Club.

Amy said, “I have always been good at maths and I have wanted to be an accountant ever since I was in Year 7 at school. Someone once told me that my autism would prevent me from following a career like that and I have always been determined to prove them wrong. I really enjoy going to college and the tutors have been very supportive. I like getting involved in all the activities too and have spent a lot of time in the Student Centre on campus.

“I am currently working from home to complete my assignments and my tutors are sending me tasks and checking on my work online. They have been very supportive and have helped me to manage my anxiety and get used to this new way of working. I am on track to get the grades I need and look forward to returning to college in September.”
