Our Travel and Tourism students from our Wigston Campus have had a busy March, being invited to interact with various companies form the industry!
On Friday 1st March, our students joined the staff of the flagship TUI Superstore in Beaumont Leys for a taster day during Apprenticeship Week. The students arrived smartly dressed and engaged with the staff in learning about the complex computer systems needed to book a range of holidays; they then spent time chatting with customers before carrying out a series of role plays designed to test the knowledge they had acquired throughout the day. This is the second year we have been invited to join our friends at TUI and the comments from the TUI staff were all very positive about the attitude and ability of our students.
The Level 3 2nd-year students have just completed two weeks of work experience at a range of employers such as Ullesthorpe Court, The Marriott, Belmont & Mercure Grand Hotels. They have also done placements at The National Space Centre, Co-op Travel and TUI. All of the 2nd years have benefited from a 2-week placement with an employer linked to the Travel, Tourism and Hospitality sector.
Our Level 2 and Level 3 1st-year students have spent 3 days volunteering at the NEC, Birmingham. The Big Bang Fair is a tent pole STEM event which attracts approx. 20,000 school children from all over the country every year. There are a host of STEM organisations and businesses present whose sole aim is to engage with the children and get them excited about a potential career in the STEM sector. Our cohort of 30 students and 5 staff members spent 10 hours a day for 3 days looking after, directing and helping to educate all those who attended. They worked on registration, managed theatre access and egress and helped to run a range of activities.
Feedback from the volunteer team leaders and Engineering UK staff (who organised the event) was very positive about the professional attitude and dedication our students displayed throughout the whole 3 days.
